While Beachgoers Fled Attack, Popular Picture Shows Lifeguard Sprinting ‘All Out’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as inhabitant of Bondi, describes the renowned shoreline as her own backyard. On that fateful weekend evening, she, like many neighbors, noticed cracking sounds ringing out across the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I considered it was still too bright and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her home, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore told her a crisis was unfolding.

Positioned on the road, conversing with a duo who had run up the slope soaked, she became aware of someone coming up at her rear. It was a rescuer, sprinting towards Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. He was alone moving in the opposite way that everyone was trying to escape from, carrying that big kit and without footwear … He was sprinting towards something that surely every instinct would instruct you to run in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely pedal to the metal running.”

A Symbol of Heroism During Crisis

The photograph Ching captured of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as a prime example of moments of valour in the wake of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to help emergency personnel, law enforcement and medical teams caring for numerous the injured.

Community Response and Support

Doolan’s story was a single example among several to come out of the community, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the site of the violence serving as a temporary hospital. It was shared that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, such as entering the ocean to rescue people needing help.

In the days after the attack, messages of appreciation circulated widely. A social media message shared thanks for the responders who exhibited that “kindness will always overcome darkness”.

The team of rescuers issued a message, explaining they were “still trying to comprehend what occurred”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your kind sentiments and support. We are deeply moved by the care for our team,” the team wrote. “In time, we will recount our experiences in the aim that it supports those affected.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the governing body that oversees many professional lifeguards, stated that the team performed exceptionally from the instant the violence started through to late that evening.

“There have been so many emotional narratives, but the popular photo of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help assist the injured is remarkable,” commented a local official.

“These individuals demonstrate dedication every day in keeping our internationally renowned shores protected for surfers and swimmers, but what we saw on that day should be celebrated.

“While we mourn and process the atrocity of this violent and horrific act of violence, I think it is crucial that we reflect on just how much positivity we have seen in the midst of such evil.”
