Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that Pluribus would turn into a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed series reaching its finale—and the next chapter officially in the works—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
On the Overwhelming Audience Reaction
One could easily to get swayed by the rampant praise and online debates regarding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it from others, and that's intentional. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Does the showrunner See the Finale of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff aren't taking cues by public opinion, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… with some caveats.
“There are some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” he states. “yet we stand ready to abandon a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Of course, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
