New research reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People using these medications should be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle management.
