The Red Devils Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.
A Major Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a major coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Her exit from Munich was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per reports, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a significant boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
