The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.

A recent initialism came to light several months into the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This term is specific to Gaza, per insights from medical experts like child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is rare for physicians to care for a minor who has lost their entire family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of young amputees is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy about numerous doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being systematically aimed at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

Gaza remains hell on earth. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that genocidal acts are continuing. Authorities rejects these accusations, consistent with how it disavows all charges it is accused of. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from advancing its stated mission of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, we are told, is what unity looks like.

The contest, notably excluded Russia from competing in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is completely different.

A Double Standard

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that international journalists are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

The contest marks seven decades next year – almost double the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it once represented. A contest that was originally built on togetherness has devolved into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
