The Details Known About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were transported to medical facilities.
The victims have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the victims who are known to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She told the events leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.
One Child
A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
