A uniquely yellow-fronted residential building in the background helped us locate the video.
Our team is checking video footage and photographs shared earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the site from which the pictures were from was based on posts saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the video.
Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the street layout confirmed the exact location the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
