Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
